Caring for your HIV-related problem: Vaginal Itching, Burning, and Discharge
PROBLEM: Experiencing a change in amount or consistency of vaginal discharge that can be thick, white, or "cottage-cheese-like", or irritation, pain, and itching of the vaginal and external genital area.
TREATMENT:  >There are many ways to treat this problem. The first step is to contact your physician or nurse. By working together, a treatment plan can be developed for you. This plan may include prescription or non-prescription medications, or other treatments.
SELF CARE:  Here are some strategies you may try to help you feel better:
  • Wear cotton underwear and change it frequently.
  • Consider wearing a non-deodorant pantiliner or pad for discharge. Avoid tampons as they can increase discomfort.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes such as tight jeans or nylon stockings.
  • Eat 1/2 cup yogurt with acidophilus every day.
  • Use mild soap when bathing, and avoid deodorant soaps, sprays, toilet paper, etc. These may cause further irritation.
  • Avoid shaving your genital area.
  • Avoid douching.
  • You may want to avoid sexual activity until the infection clears up as it may be uncomfortable for you. However, if you do decide to have sex, use a condom to avoid spreading the infection. It is a good idea not to have oral sex at this time as yeast can occur in your mouth as well.
